Re-inventing the Wheel
When specialised tools belonging to crafts at risk of extinction are not archived, there is a loss of valuable information and purpose. However, this loss can be seen as an opportunity for creativity and design. Re-inventing the Wheel, explores this translation from loss to innovation by focusing on a mysterious tool depicted in the 1698’s etching “Der Panzermacher” by Christoph Weigel the Elder; a portrayal of a Maille Maker in his workshop. Although the tool's name, function, and even existence are unknown, through reconstructing the tool and using its uncanny yet nonsensical form, potential for inspiration, new designs, mechanics, and ideas can be created. Focusing on the intuitive generation of unique circular tools and their uses, the project playfully revives of a lost tool from history.
